What every passenger needs to know before flying with Somali Airlines
Travel Requirements
Entry requirements — including passport validity, visa categories, and health documentation — vary by nationality and destination, and are subject to change without notice. As part of your pre-flight preparation, please confirm the most current passport and visa requirements for your destination directly with the relevant embassy, consulate, or immigration authority before you travel with Somali Airlines.
Checks to Complete Before You Depart
Your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended date of return, and has sufficient blank visa pages
Any required visa, entry permit, or electronic travel authorization has been obtained and is valid for your full itinerary
You meet any applicable health or vaccination requirements set by the destination's public health authorities
Supporting documents (proof of onward travel, accommodation, or funds) are on hand if requested by immigration officials
Names and dates of birth on your booking match your passport exactly, to avoid delays at check-in
Because visa and entry rules can change at short notice and without prior warning, Somali Airlines strongly advises reconfirming requirements in the days immediately before departure. Somali Airlines cannot be held responsible for denied boarding, denied entry, fines, or other consequences arising from incomplete, invalid, or incorrect travel documentation.
Electronic Travel Authorization (eTAS) for Travel to Somalia
Most visitors travelling to Somalia are required to hold a valid electronic Travel Authorization (eTAS) prior to arrival. The eTAS is a digital entry permit linked to your passport and is processed online in advance of your trip, removing the need to obtain a physical visa at a Somali mission abroad.
Somali Airlines recommends applying as early as possible, as processing times may vary during periods of high demand.
Complete the online application in advance of travel, allowing sufficient processing time before your departure date
Provide your passport details, travel dates, and contact information exactly as they appear on your travel documents
Pay the applicable eTAS fee securely online and retain your approval confirmation, which should be carried (printed or digital) for presentation on arrival
Ensure your approved eTAS matches the passport you will actually travel on
Check-in & Boarding
Arriving with time to spare gives you a smoother start to your journey and ensures you clear document checks, bag drop, and security comfortably before your flight closes. Recommended check-in windows vary by route and airport, so always confirm the specific timing for your departure city.
At the Check-in Counter
Present your passport (and eTAS approval or visa, where applicable) together with your booking reference
Online check-in and mobile boarding passes are available where offered — check your booking confirmation for eligibility
Passengers requiring special assistance should notify Somali Airlines in advance so arrangements can be confirmed ahead of travel
Health, Customs & Currency
Health Requirements
Some destinations require proof of vaccination — such as yellow fever — as a condition of entry, particularly for passengers transiting through or arriving from affected regions. Requirements are set by the destination's public health authority and can change with limited notice, so check current guidance before you travel.
Customs & Prohibited Items
Each destination maintains its own customs regulations covering the import and export of currency, goods, medications, and other items. Passengers are responsible for declaring items as required and for complying with all applicable customs laws at both departure and arrival points.
Declare cash or monetary instruments above the threshold set by your departure and destination countries
Carry prescription medication in original packaging, along with a copy of the prescription where possible
Check destination-specific restrictions on food, plant, and animal products before packing
Transit & Connecting Passengers
If your itinerary includes a connection, entry or transit requirements may apply even if you do not intend to leave the airport. Some destinations require a transit visa or eTAS-equivalent authorization for passengers passing through, depending on nationality and length of layover.
